Overwhelming (Al-Ghaasheyah)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
Has not there come to you the news of the overwhelming calamity? 1 Some faces, that Day, will be humiliated (in the Hell-fire, i.e. the faces of all disbelievers, Jews and Christians, etc.). 2 Toiling, weary, 3 Scorched by burning fire, 4 Drinking from a boiling spring, 5 They will have no food except bitter thorn, 6 which will neither nourish nor satisfy hunger. 7 Many a face will be in serenity on that day. 8 Glad for their effort past, 9 In a lofty garden, 10 Where they shall neither hear harmful speech nor falsehood, 11 Therein will be a bubbling spring: 12 and raised couches, 13 And drinking-cups ready placed, 14 well-placed cushions, 15 and carpets spread out. 16 What, do they not consider how the camel was created, 17 And the heaven, how it is raised? 18 and how the mountains were firmly fixed? 19 And at the earth - how it is spread out? 20 And so, [O Prophet,] exhort them; thy task is only to exhort: 21 You are not over them a controller. 22 However, as for him who turns away, being bent on denying the truth, 23 God shall chastise him with the greatest chastisement. 24 Surely to Us is their turning back, 25 Ours is surely then to reckon with them. 26
