Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
By the Dawn, 1 and ten nights, 2 And the even and the odd, 3 and by the night when it departs. 4 Is there (not) in these an adjuration (or evidence) for those who understand? 5 Dost thou not consider how thy Lord dealt with (the tribe of) A'ad, 6 (The people of) Aram, possessors of lofty buildings, 7 The like of which were not produced in (all) the land? 8 And with (the tribe of) Thamud, who clove the rocks in the valley; 9 And with Pharaoh, lord of stakes? 10 Those who rebelled in the cities, 11 And heaped therein mischief (on mischief). 12 Thy Lord unloosed on them a scourge of chastisement; 13 for, indeed, your Sustainer is ever on the watch! 14 As for man, when his Lord tests him, through honour and blessings, he says, "My Lord has honoured me," 15 But when He tests him by straitening his sustenance, he says: “My Lord has humiliated me.” 16 Not at all – but rather you do not honour the orphan. 17 Nor urge upon each other the feeding of the poor, 18 and greedily devour the entire inheritance, 19 And ye love riches with exceeding love. 20 Nay! when the earth is made to crumble to pieces, 21 And thy Lord cometh, and His angels, rank upon rank, 22 And brought [within view], that Day, is Hell - that Day, man will remember, but what good to him will be the remembrance? 23 He will say, “Alas – if only I had sent some good deeds ahead, during my lifetime!” 24 For, none can make suffer as He will make suffer [the sinners] on that Day, 25 And none will bind [as severely] as His binding [of the evildoers]. 26 'O soul at peace, 27 Return thou unto thy Sustainer, well-pleased [and] pleasing [Him]: 28 enter, then, together with My [other true] servants 29 Enter then My garden." 30
