Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the dawn; 1 And the ten nights, 2 by the even and the odd, 3 And the night when it departeth, 4 Is there in this an oath for one endowed with understanding? 5 Have you not heard of how your Lord dealt with the tribe of 'Ad, 6 (And) the tall giants of Iram? 7 The like of which were not produced in (all) the land? 8 and with [the tribe of] Thamud, who hollowed out rocks in the valley? 9 And [with] Pharaoh, owner of the stakes? - 10 [All of] whom oppressed within the lands 11 and worked much corruption therein? 12 and therefore thy Sustainer let loose upon them a scourge of suffering: 13 your Lord keeps an eye on (all evil-doing people). 14 As for man - when his Lord proveth him and so honoureth him and is bounteous unto him, then he saith: 'my Lord hath honoured me, 15 And when He proveth him, and so stinteth unto him his provision, he saith: 'my Lord hath despised me. 16 Nay! But you treat not the orphans with kindness and generosity (i.e. you neither treat them well, nor give them their exact right of inheritance)! 17 and you urge not the feeding of the needy, 18 And you consume inheritance, devouring [it] altogether, 19 and love the riches, loving them ardently. 20 Surely when We pound the earth to powder grounded, pounded to dust, 21 And thy Lord shall come and the angels, rank on rank. 22 and Gehenna (Hell) is brought near on that Day the human will remember, and how shall the Reminder be for him? 23 He will say: "Alas the woe! Would that I had sent ahead something in my life." 24 None punisheth as He will punish on that day! 25 And none will bind as He will bind. 26 O satisfied soul, 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased (with him), well-pleasing (Him), 28 "Enter you, then, among My honoured slaves, 29 Enter thou My Paradise!' 30
