The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
There hath asked an asker for the torment about to befall. 1 The infidels, of which there is no averter. 2 No one can defend him against God, the Lord of the exalted positions. 3 The angels and the Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years, 4 So be thou patient with a sweet patience; 5 behold, men look upon that [reckoning] as something far away 6 And We see it nigh. 7 [It will take place] on a Day when the sky will be like molten lead, 8 And the hills become as flakes of wool, 9 even intimate friends will not inquire about their friends, 10 Though they will be put in sight of each other,- the sinner's desire will be: Would that he could redeem himself from the Penalty of that Day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 his companion (wife), his brother, 12 And his family who had stood by him, 13 And all those who are on the earth, to save himself. 14 By no means! for it would be the Fire of Hell!- 15 Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!- 16 and it will claim all those who turned their backs [on the true faith] and turned away [from the truth], 17 And collected [wealth] and hoarded. 18 ۞ Truly man was created very impatient;- 19 bewailing when evil befalls him, 20 but when good comes upon him, he is grudging 21 Not so, however, those who consciously turn towards God in prayer. 22 who are constant in prayer; 23 And those in whose wealth is a recognised right. 24 for the impoverished nonrequester and the requester, 25 And those who hold to the truth of the Day of Judgment; 26 and who stand in dread of their Sustainer's chastisement 27 surely the chastisement of their Lord is a thing none can feel secure from – 28 And those who preserve their chastity 29 Except with their wives and the (women slaves and captives) whom their right hands possess, for (then) they are not to be blamed, 30 But whosoever seeks beyond that, they are the transgressors. 31 (Those) who keep their trusts and their covenant, 32 and who stand firm whenever they bear witness; 33 And those who guard their Salat (prayers) well. 34 They will live in gardens with honour. 35
