Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the Dawn 1 By the ten nights (i.e. the first ten days of the month of Dhul-Hijjah). 2 by the even, and the odd, 3 And by oath of the night when it recedes 4 Is there in that an oath for the mindful? 5 Seest thou not how thy Lord dealt with the 'Ad (people),- 6 of Iram, known for their lofty columns, 7 the like of which was never created in the land, 8 And with (the tribe of) Thamud, who clove the rocks in the valley; 9 And Pharaoh, of the pegs (impaling his victims)? 10 [All of] whom oppressed within the lands 11 And multiplied therein corruption. 12 So your Lord poured a scourge of punishment over them. 13 for, indeed, your Sustainer is ever on the watch! 14 As for man, whenever his Lord trieth him by honouring him, and is gracious unto him, he saith: My Lord honoureth me. 15 And if He tests him and restricts his livelihood – thereupon he says, “My Lord has degraded me!” 16 No! But you show no good to the orphan, 17 And urge not on the feeding of the poor. 18 And ye devour inheritance - all with greed, 19 and you love wealth with an ardent love 20 But no; when the earth is ground to powder, 21 And thy Lord cometh, and His angels, rank upon rank, 22 And Hell, that Day, is brought (face to face),- on that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance profit him? 23 He will say: would that I had sent before for this life of mine! 24 So on that day, no one punishes like He does! 25 Nor shall any bind with His bond. 26 (It will be said to the pious): "O (you) the one in (complete) rest and satisfaction! 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him], 28 So enter among My servants, 29 Enter My Paradise." 30
