Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the dawn, 1 And the ten nights, 2 And by oath of the even and the odd. 3 Consider the night as it runs its course! 4 There is indeed in them (the above oaths) sufficient proofs for men of understanding (and that, they should avoid all kinds of sins and disbeliefs, etc.)! 5 (Muhammad), consider how your Lord dealt with the tribe of Ad, 6 the people of Iram, the city of many pillars, 7 The likes of whom had never been created in the land? 8 And with Thamud who hewed out rocks in the vale, 9 And with Firaun, who used to crucify. 10 [All of] whom oppressed within the lands 11 And made therein much mischief. 12 Wherefore thy Lord poured on them the scourge of His torment. 13 Most surely your Lord is watching. 14 And as for man, when his Lord tries him and [thus] is generous to him and favors him, he says, "My Lord has honored me." 15 But when he tries him and stints for him his provision, then he says, 'My Lord has despised me.' 16 Nay! but you do not honor the orphan, 17 and you do not urge one another to feed the needy, 18 And ye devour heritages with devouring greed. 19 And ye love riches with exceeding love. 20 Nay, but [how will you fare on Judgment Day,] when the earth is crushed with crushing upon crushing, 21 and thy Lord comes, and the angels rank on rank, 22 and Gehenna is brought out, upon that day man will remember; and how shall the Reminder be for him? 23 He will say: 'Would that I had forwarded (good works) for my life!' 24 Upon that day none shall chastise as He chastises, 25 None bindeth as He then will bind. 26 O you tranquil soul, 27 "Come back thou to thy Lord,- well pleased (thyself), and well-pleasing unto Him! 28 Enter among My servants 29 Enter thou My Paradise!' 30
