Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the dawn; 1 By the ten nights (i.e. the first ten days of the month of Dhul-Hijjah). 2 by the even, and the odd, 3 And the night when it departs. 4 Is there in this an oath for one endowed with understanding? 5 Bethinkest thou not in what wise thy Lord did with the 'A'ad: 6 the people of the huge columned city of Eram 7 the like of which has never been created in the land, 8 And (with) Thamud (people), who cut (hewed) out rocks in the valley (to make dwellings)? 9 (Also consider the people of) the Pharaoh who victimized people by placing them on the stake, 10 (All) these transgressed beyond bounds in the lands, 11 And heaped therein mischief (on mischief). 12 (Therefore) your Lord let loose upon them a scourge of punishment; 13 Verily thy Lord is in an ambuscade, 14 BUT AS FOR man, whenever his Sustainer tries him by His generosity and by letting him enjoy a life of ease, he says, "My Sustainer has been [justly] generous towards me"; 15 And if He tests him and restricts his livelihood – thereupon he says, “My Lord has degraded me!” 16 Nay! But you treat not the orphans with kindness and generosity (i.e. you neither treat them well, nor give them their exact right of inheritance)! 17 and do not urge one another to feed the poor, 18 And ye devour heritages with devouring greed. 19 And you love wealth with exceeding love. 20 Surely when We pound the earth to powder grounded, pounded to dust, 21 And thy Lord shall come with angels, rank on rank, 22 And on that Day hell will be brought [within sight]; on that Day man will remember [all that he did and failed to do]: but what will that remembrance avail him? 23 He will say: would that I had sent before for this life of mine! 24 For, that Day, His Chastisement will be such as none (else) can inflict, 25 And no one binds like He does! 26 O the contented soul! 27 return to your Lord, well-pleased, well-pleasing. 28 Enter thou among My righteous bondmen! 29 and enter My Paradise.” 30
