The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ I do not (need to) swear by this town (Mecca) 1 And thou shalt be allowed in yonder city 2 And the begetter and that which he begat, 3 Verily We have created man into toil and struggle. 4 What, does he think none has power over him, 5 saying, 'I have consumed wealth abundant'? 6 Thinketh he that none beholdeth him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 And a tongue, and a pair of lips?- 9 And did We not guide him to the two elevated things? 10 But he has not attempted the ascent. 11 And what will make you comprehend what the uphill road is? 12 (It is:) freeing the bondman; 13 or the feeding, upon a day of [one's own] hunger, 14 To the orphan with claims of relationship, 15 or to a needy person in distress; 16 and to be one of those who believe and urge one another to steadfastness and compassion. 17 Those are the companions of the right. 18 And those who disbelieve Our signs - they are the fellows of the lefthand. 19 Upon them shall be a Fire that will hem them in. 20
