The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
۞ I swear by this city (Mecca) 1 And you are free to live upon it, -- 2 And by the begetter (i.e. Adam) and that which he begot (i.e. his progeny); 3 Verily, We have created man in toil. 4 Thinketh he that none hath power over him? 5 He says: “I have squandered enormous wealth.” 6 Does he think that none has observed him? 7 Did We not give him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips? 9 and shown him the two paths? 10 But he hath made no haste on the path that is steep. 11 What could let you know what the height is! 12 It is the freeing of a slave 13 or the feeding in times of famine 14 of an orphaned relative 15 or to a needy person in distress; 16 And to be of those who believe, and urge upon one another to persevere, and urge upon each other to be kind. 17 Such are they that have attained to righteousness; 18 But those who disbelieve Our revelations, their place will be on the left hand. 19 with the Fire closed above them. 20
True are the words of Allah the Almighty.
