The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ I do not (need to) swear by this town (Mecca) 1 And you shall be made free from obligation in this city-- 2 And the begetter and whom he begot. 3 that We have created man into a life of toil and trial. 4 Does man think that no one will ever have power over him? 5 He saith: I have wasted riches plenteous. 6 Thinketh he that none beholdeth him? 7 Did We not grant him two eyes, 8 a tongue, and two lips, 9 And shown him the two highways? 10 But he did not venture to scale the difficult steep. 11 What could let you know what the height is! 12 (It is) the setting free of a slave, 13 Or the feeding on a day of hunger. 14 To an orphan, having relationship, 15 and downtrodden destitute person, (so that he would be of) 16 And then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion. 17 These are the people of the right hand. 18 And (as for) those who disbelieve in our communications, they are the people of the left hand. 19 who will be engulfed in the fire. 20
