The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
By oath of the sun and its light 1 By the moon when it followeth it, 2 And the day when it shows it, 3 by the night when it covers the earth with darkness, 4 By the heaven and That which built it 5 And by oath of the earth and by oath of Him Who spread it. 6 And [by] the soul and He who proportioned it 7 And inspired in it the knowledge of its sins and its piety. 8 Surely blissful is he who hath cleansed it, 9 and those who corrupt their souls will certainly be deprived (of happiness). 10 The Thamud denied (the truth) in their perverseness 11 When the most wicked among them stood up in defiance. 12 And the apostle of God had to tell them: "This is God's she-camel, let her drink." 13 But they called him a liar and slaughtered her, therefore their Lord crushed them for their sin and levelled them (with the ground). 14 And He (Allah) feared not the consequences thereof. 15
