The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
I swear by the sun and its brilliance, 1 And the moon when it follows the sun, 2 Consider the day as it reveals the world, 3 and by the night when it enshrouds him! 4 By the Firmament and its (wonderful) structure; 5 by the earth and Who spread it, 6 by the soul and Who shaped it 7 And its enlightenment as to its wrong and its right;- 8 Prosperous is he who purifies it, 9 and he who suppresses it will be ruined. 10 TO [THIS] TRUTH gave the lie, in their overweening arrogance, [the tribe of] Thamud, 11 when the most wicked of them broke forth, 12 then the Messenger of God said to them, 'The She-camel of God; let her drink!' 13 But they denied him, and they hamstrung her, so Allah doomed them for their sin and rased (their dwellings). 14 for none [of them] had any fear of what might befall them. 15
