The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
I CALL TO witness the sun and his early morning splendour, 1 And the moon when it follows the sun, 2 And the day when it revealeth him, 3 And the night when it draws a veil over it, 4 By the heaven and Who built it, 5 The earth and its spreading out, 6 Consider the human self, and how it is formed in accordance with what it is meant to be, 7 And inspired it with the wickedness thereof and the piety thereof, 8 He has succeeded who purifies it, 9 And indeed failed is the one who covered it in sin. 10 The Thamud tribe rejected the truth because of their arrogance, 11 when the most wretched of them uprose, 12 then the Messenger of God said to them, 'The She-camel of God; let her drink!' 13 Then they rejected him (as a false prophet), and they hamstrung her. So their Lord, on account of their crime, obliterated their traces and made them equal (in destruction, high and low)! 14 He does not fear the consequence. 15
