The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
I CALL TO witness the sun and his early morning splendour, 1 and by the moon as it follows it, 2 The day when it reveals his radiance, 3 By the Night as it conceals it; 4 And [by] the sky and He who constructed it 5 and by the earth and how He spread it, 6 by the soul and how He formed it, 7 Then He inspired it to understand what is right and wrong for it; 8 He who purifies it will prosper, 9 and failed has he who seduces it. 10 Samood gave the lie (to the truth) in their inordinacy, 11 When the most wretched of them was sent forth. 12 So the Noble Messenger of Allah said to them, “Stay away from the she camel of Allah, and from its turn to drink.” 13 But they cried him lies, and hamstrung her, so their Lord crushed them for their sin, and leveled them: 14 for none [of them] had any fear of what might befall them. 15
