The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the night, when it envelops, 1 and by the day as it appears radiantly, 2 And the creating of the male and the female, 3 surely your strivings are divergent. 4 So for one who gave and practised piety 5 and believes in the truth of what is right, 6 Surely We will ease his way unto the state of ease. 7 But for those who are niggardly, horde their wealth, 8 and have no faith in receiving any reward (from God). 9 for him shall We make easy the path towards hardship: 10 And his riches will not avail him when he falls headlong (into the Abyss). 11 Lo! Ours it is (to give) the guidance 12 And most surely Ours is the hereafter and the former. 13 Wherefore I have warned you of Fire flaming, 14 None shall enter it but the most unhappy, 15 The one who denied and turned away. 16 And avoid it shall the most pious, 17 he that spends his possessions [on others] so that he might grow in purity 18 not as payment for favours received, 19 Except the seeking of the pleasure of his Lord, the Most High. 20 and such, indeed, shall in time be well-pleased. 21
