The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the night, when it envelops, 1 and by the day when it breaks in its glory, 2 and by the creation of the male and the female. 3 you strive in various ways. 4 So he who gives (in charity) and fears (Allah), 5 and confirms the reward most fair, 6 observe piety, and believe in receiving rewards from God. 7 And as for him who is niggardly and considers himself free from need (of Allah), 8 And rejects goodness, 9 We will facilitate for him the difficult end. 10 And his riches will not avail him when he falls headlong (into the Abyss). 11 Indeed guiding is upon Us. 12 and, behold, Ours is [the dominion over] the life to come as well as [over] this earlier part [of your life]: 13 Therefore I warn you of the fire that flames: 14 None shall enter it but the most unhappy, 15 He who denieth and turneth away. 16 The pious ones will be safe from this fire 17 Those who spend their wealth for increase in self-purification, 18 not as payment for any favours that he received, 19 but only out of a longing for the countenance of his Sustainer, the All-Highest: 20 And he shall soon be well-pleased. 21
