The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
CONSIDER the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 and by the day when it breaks in its glory, 2 And by Him Who created male and female; 3 Your striving is most surely (directed to) various (ends). 4 So he who gives (in charity) and fears (Allah), 5 and confirms the reward most fair, 6 We shall surely ease him to the Path of Easing; 7 And for him who hoarded wealth and remained carefree, 8 and rejects what is right, 9 For him We shall ease the way of adversity, 10 And his riches will not avail him when he falls headlong (into the Abyss). 11 Truly! Ours it is (to give) guidance, 12 And truly, unto Us (belong) the last (Hereafter) and the first (this world). 13 Therefor have I warned you of the flaming Fire 14 [the fire] which none shall have to endure but that most hapless wretch 15 Who gives the lie (to the truth) and turns (his) back. 16 But the God-fearing shall be kept away from it, 17 He who gives his wealth to be purified, 18 And have in his mind no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return, 19 Except the seeking of the pleasure of his Lord, the Most High. 20 Will surely be gratified. 21
