The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
CONSIDER the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 And the day when it shines in all its glory, 2 And Him who created the male and female, 3 surely your striving is to diverse ends. 4 As for him who giveth and is dutiful (toward Allah) 5 And (in all sincerity) testifies to the best,- 6 We will ease him toward ease. 7 But as for him who hoardeth and deemeth himself independent, 8 and cries lies to the reward most fair, 9 We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Misery; 10 When he falls (into Hell), his wealth will not help him. 11 Truly! Ours it is (to give) guidance, 12 And verily unto Us (belong) the End and the Beginning. 13 and so I warn you of the raging fire 14 [the fire] which none shall have to endure but that most hapless wretch 15 who gives the lie to the truth and turns away [from it]. 16 But save him who fears 17 even he who gives his wealth. to purify himself 18 and confers no favor upon anyone for recompense 19 But only seeking the Countenance of his Lord the Most High. 20 He will surely be well-pleased (with him). 21
