The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Read in the name of your Lord Who created. 1 Created man from a clinging substance. 2 Recite: And thy Lord is the Most Generous, 3 who has taught [man] the use of the pen 4 Taught man what he knew not. 5 Nay, verily, man becomes grossly overweening 6 As he considers himself independent! 7 Surely to your Lord is the return. 8 Have you seen him who forbids 9 A slave when he prayeth? 10 What thinkest thou? If he were upon guidance 11 Or enjoins Righteousness? 12 Bethinkest thou, if he belieth and turneth away? 13 Does he not know that God observes all things? 14 Let him know that if he does not desist, We shall certainly drag him by his forelocks, 15 A lying, sinful forelock! 16 Then, let him call upon his council (of helpers), 17 and We too will call the stern and angry keepers of hell. 18 No indeed; do thou not obey him, and bow thyself, and draw nigh. ۩ 19
