The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Read in the name of your Lord Who created. 1 Created man from an embryo; 2 Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous, 3 who has taught [man] the use of the pen 4 Hath taught man that which he knew not. 5 No indeed; surely Man waxes insolent, 6 That he thinketh himself independent! 7 Surely your returning is to your Lord. 8 Hast thou seen him who dissuadeth 9 A bondman when he offers the prayer? 10 Have you thought, if he had been on guidance 11 or is concerned with God-consciousness? 12 What do you think? Have you seen if he belies and turns away, 13 Does he, then, not know that God sees [all]? 14 Yes certainly, if he does not desist, We will seize him by the forelock. 15 his lying, sinful forelock. 16 Then let him call his associates; 17 We will call on the angels of punishment (to deal with him)! 18 Nay, Obey not thou him. But prostrate thyself, and draw near (unto Allah). ۩ 19
