The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
READ in the name of thy Sustainer, who has created 1 created man from a clot of congealed blood. 2 Read, and your Lord only is the Most Beneficent, 3 who has taught [man] the use of the pen 4 Taught man that which he knew not. 5 Nay, surely man transgresses; 6 because he thinks that he is independent. 7 Lo! unto thy Lord is the return. 8 Seest thou one who forbids- 9 A bondman of Ours when he prayeth 10 Have you seen if he is upon guidance 11 or is concerned with God-consciousness? 12 What do you think? Have you seen if he belies and turns away, 13 Does he not know that God sees? 14 And yet indeed if he does not desist We shall drag him by the forelock, 15 By the lying, the sinful forelock. 16 So let him call on his concourse! 17 [the while] We shall summon the forces of heavenly chastisement! 18 No indeed! Do not obey him, but prostrate yourself and come closer to God. ۩ 19
