The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Recite in the name of your Lord Who created, 1 created man out of a germ-cell 2 Read - for thy Sustainer is the Most Bountiful One 3 who taught by the pen, 4 He taught the human being what he did not know. 5 Nay! man is most surely inordinate, 6 As he considers himself independent! 7 Indeed, to your Lord is the returning. 8 Bethinkest thou him who forbiddeth, 9 A slave when he prayeth? 10 What will happen if the praying person is rightly guided 11 or bade to godfearing -- 12 Hast thou seen if he denieth (Allah's guidance) and is froward? 13 does he not know that Allah sees? 14 And yet indeed if he does not desist We shall drag him by the forelock, 15 A lying, sinning forelock. 16 Then let him call his associates; 17 We will call the guards of hell. 18 Nay, heed him not: But bow down in adoration, and bring thyself the closer (to Allah)! ۩ 19
