The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O thou shrouded in thy mantle, 1 Arise and deliver thy warning! 2 And thy Lord do thou magnify! 3 And thine raiment purify. 4 And uncleanness do shun, 5 And do not through giving seek thyself to gain, 6 For the sake of thy Lord, be patient! 7 Then, when the Trumpet is sounded (i.e. its second blowing); 8 that will surely be a hard day, 9 and for the disbelievers, in particular, it will not be at all easy. 10 Let Me alone with him whom I created lonely. 11 And to whom I granted extensive wealth 12 and sons to be by his side, 13 And for whom I smoothed everything. 14 And yet he desires that I should add more! 15 Nay! He is forward unto Our signs; 16 I shall force him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 Indeed, he thought and deliberated. 18 May he be condemned! 19 Again accursed be he, how evilly did he decide! 20 Then he looked round; 21 Then he frowned and scowled; 22 and in the end he turns his back [on Our message,] and glories in his arrogance, 23 Then said he: "This is nothing but magic, derived from of old; 24 This is nothing but the word of a mortal!" 25 I shall make him suffer the torment of hell. 26 And what do you know what Hell is? 27 It does not allow anyone to live, and neither does it leave anyone to die; 28 and it burns the flesh. 29 Over it are nineteen keepers. 30 We have not appointed the guards of hell, except angels; and did not keep this number except to test the disbelievers – in order that the People given the Book(s) may be convinced, and to increase the faith of the believers – and so that the People given the Book(s) and the Muslims may not have any doubt – and so that those in whose hearts is a disease and the disbelievers, may say, “What does Allah mean by this amazing example?” This is how Allah sends astray whomever He wills, and guides whomever He wills; and no one knows the armies of Allah except Him; and this is not but an advice to man. 31
