Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
Ha-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language – Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) 1 The perspicuous Book is witness 2 We sent it down during a Blessed Night: for We (ever) wish to warn (against Evil). 3 therein every wise bidding 4 [Every] matter [proceeding] from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger] 5 A mercy from your Lord. Verily He is all-hearing and all-knowing, 6 the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them - if you could but grasp it with inner certainty! 7 There is no deity save Him: He grants life and deals death: He is your Sustainer as well as the Sustainer of your forebears of old. 8 Nay! They play in doubt. 9 Wait for the day (which will come before the Day of Judgment) when the sky will give out dense smoke 10 That will envelop the people. This will be a painful punishment. 11 'O our Lord, remove Thou from us the chastisement; we are believers.' 12 How can they benefit from admonition, seeing that a messenger had already come to them explaining things clearly? 13 and they turned away, saying, "He is a trained and insane person". 14 If We remove the torment a little, you revert back (to misdeeds). 15 on the Day when We shall seize [all sinners] with a most mighty onslaught, We shall, verily, inflict Our retribution [on you as well]! 16 ۞ And We had already tried before them the people of Pharaoh, and there came to them a noble messenger, 17 Who said, “Give the bondmen of Allah into my custody; I am indeed a trustworthy Noble Messenger for you.” 18 And saying: Be not proud against Allah. Lo! I bring you a clear warrant. 19 I seek protection from my Lord and your Lord from your decision of stoning me. 20 "If ye believe me not, at least keep yourselves away from me." 21 Moses addressed his Lord, saying, "Lord, these people are sinners". 22 "Journey by night with My devotees," (it was said); "you will certainly be pursued. 23 "And leave the sea as it is (quiet and divided). Verily, They are a host to be drowned." 24 [And so they perished: and] how many gardens did they leave behind, and water-runnels, 25 and cornfields and splendid buildings, 26 And pleasant things wherein they took delight! 27 Thus it was; and We passed them on to another people. 28 Neither did the heavens weep for them, nor the earth, nor were they granted respite. 29
