Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
Ha-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language – Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) 1 By the Clear Book. 2 Behold, from on high have We bestowed it on a blessed night: for, verily, We have always been warning [man]. 3 In the (Night) is made distinct every affair of wisdom, 4 determined as a bidding from Us, (We are ever sending) 5 in pursuance of thy Sustainer's grace [unto man]. Verily, He alone is all-hearing, all-knowing, 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, if you would be sure. 7 There is no god but He: It is He Who gives life and gives death,- The Lord and Cherisher to you and your earliest ancestors. 8 Nay! They play in doubt. 9 Watch for the Day when the heaven will bring clear smoke, 10 Enveloping the people: this will be a Penalty Grievous. 11 (They will say): "Our Lord! Remove the torment from us, really we shall become believers!" 12 How should they have the Reminder, seeing a clear Messenger already came to them, 13 But they turned away from him, and said: "He is well-instructed, (but) possessed." 14 'Behold, We are removing the chastisement a little; behold, you revert!' 15 Upon the day when We shall assault most mightily, then We shall take Our vengeance. 16 ۞ Indeed before that We subjected the Pharaonites to the same test. A noble Messenger came to them 17 Saying: Deliver to me the servants of Allah, surely I am a faithful apostle to you, 18 And saying exalt not yourselves against Allah; verily I have come unto you with an authority manifest. 19 And surely I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord that you should stone me to death: 20 If you do not believe in me, leave me alone." 21 And [finally] he called to his Lord that these were a criminal people. 22 God said, "Set out with My servants by night, for you will certainly be pursued. 23 And leave thou the sea divided: verily they are a host to be drowned. 24 How many gardens and fountains they left behind them, 25 And the cornlands and the goodly sites 26 And wealth (and conveniences of life), wherein they had taken such delight! 27 Thus. And We caused to inherit it another people. 28 and neither sky nor earth shed tears over them, nor were they allowed a respite. 29
