The nobles of Pharaoh said: "He surely is a clever magician. 109 who seeks to drive you from your land!" Pharaoh said, "What then do you advise?" 110 They answered: "Let him and his brother wait awhile, and send unto all cities heralds 111 "To bring all the wise magicians to you." 112 And the sorcerers came to Pharaoh, saying, 'We shall surely have a wage, if we should be the victors?' 113 Answered [Pharaoh]: "Yes; and verily, you shall be among those who are near unto me." 114 They said: O Musa! either thou cast down, or we shall be the ones to cast down. 115 He replied, "Throw yours first." Their great magic bewitched people's eyes and terrified them. 116 And we revealed unto Musa: cast down thy rod. And lo! it was swallowing up that which they had feigned. 117 ۞ Thus truth was confirmed, and all that they did was made of no effect. 118 Thus were they there defeated and brought low. 119 And the magicians flung themselves prostrate. 120 Saying: "We believe in the Lord of the Worlds,- 121 The Lord of Moses and Aaron." 122 Said Pharaoh: "Have you come to believe in him ere I have given you permission? Behold, this is indeed a plot which you have cunningly devised in this [my] city in order to drive out its people hence! But in time you shall come to know, [my revenge]: 123 I will cut off on opposite sides a hand and a foot, and then crucify you all' 124 They said: "Verily, we are returning to our Lord. 125 You would punish us only because we believed in the signs of our Lord when they were shown to us. Our Lord, pour patience upon us, and cause us to die in a state of submission to You." 126
