For years We afflicted Pharaoh's people with shortages in food so that perhaps they would take heed. 130 But when good befell them they said: This is due to us; and when evil afflicted them, they attributed it to the ill-luck of Musa and those with him; surely their evil fortune is only from Allah but most of them do not know. 131 They said (to Moses): "Whatever be the Signs thou bringest, to work therewith thy sorcery on us, we shall never believe in thee. 132 So We sent on them: the flood, the locusts, the lice, the frogs, and the blood: (as a succession of) manifest signs, yet they remained arrogant, and they were of those people who were Mujrimun (criminals, polytheists, sinners, etc.). 133 When the torment would strike them, they would ask Moses, "Pray for us to your Lord through your covenant with Him. If He saves us from the torment, we shall certainly believe in you and permit you and the children of Israel to leave". 134 But when We removed the scourge from them until a term - a term which they were bound to reach - they at once broke their promise. 135 So We punished them and drowned them in the sea, for they had belied Our signs and gave no heed to them. 136 We gave the persecuted nation dominion over the eastern and western lands which We had blessed. So the Word of your Lord, the finest, was fulfilled for the Children of Israel because of their patience; and We destroyed the edifices, and towers of Pharaoh and whatsoever they manufactured. 137 And We led the Children of Isra'il across the sea. Then they came upon a people cleaving to the idols they had. They said: Musa! make for us a god even as they have gods. He said: verily ye are a people given to ignorance. 138 The way these people follow is bound to lead to destruction; and all their works are vain. 139 He said: "Shall I seek for you an Ilahan (a God) other than Allah, while He has given you superiority over the 'Alamin (mankind and jinns of your time)." 140 We delivered you from Pharaoh's people, who afflicted you with dreadful torment, slaying your male children and sparing only your daughters. That was surely a great trial for you by your Lord." 141
