Jonah, too, was one of the Messengers. 139 When he ran away to a ship completely laden, 140 Then he joined the lots, and was of the condemned. 141 The fish swallowed him up and he deserved (all this). 142 But had it not been that he was of those who glorify (Us), 143 He would have stayed in its belly till the day the dead are raised. 144 ۞ But We threw him on a wide bare tract of land while he was ill; 145 And We made a gourd tree grow over him. 146 And We had sent him to a hundred thousand: rather they exceeded. 147 So they accepted faith – We therefore gave them usage for a while. 148 Now, ask them, has your Lord daughters, and they sons? 149 Have We created the angels as females before their very eyes? 150 Is it not of their own calumny that they say, 151 Allah has begotten; and most surely they are liars. 152 (And again of their falsehood): He hath preferred daughters to sons. 153 What is the matter with you? How do you judge? 154 Will you then not take heed? 155 “Or do you have some clear proof?” 156 Produce, then, that divine writ of yours, if you are speaking the truth! 157 They assert kinship between Him and the angels. But the angels know that they (the liars) will be arraigned (in Hell). 158 Hallowed be Allah from that which they ascribe to Him. 159 except for God's sincere servants. 160 For, verily, neither ye nor those ye worship- 161 can lure away from God any 162 Except one who is (destined) to burn in Hell. 163 There is not one of us (angels) but has his known place (or position); 164 We stand in ranks (for prayer) 165 “And indeed we are those who say His purity.” 166 And indeed they (Arab pagans) used to say; 167 If we had but a reminder from the men of old 168 we would have been sincere worshipers of Allah' 169 They therefore denied it, so they will soon come to know. 170 for, long ago has Our word gone forth unto Our servants, the message-bearers, 171 That they verily would be helped, 172 And that Our hosts, they verily would be the victors. 173 So turn thou from them for a while, 174 And (then) see them, so they too shall see. 175 Do they, then, [really] wish that Our chastisement be hastened on? 176 But when it cometh home to them, then it will be a hapless morn for those who have been warned. 177 So turn away from them for a time 178 And watch, for they will (soon) see. 179 Glorified be your Lord, the Lord of Honour and Power! (He is free) from what they attribute unto Him! 180 So peace be on the messengers, 181 And all praise unto Allah the Lord of the worlds. 182
