Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha. Mim. 1 By the Clear Book. 2 that We sent down during a Blessed Night. We are ever warning. 3 (We revealed it on the Night) wherein every matter is wisely determined 4 [Every] matter [proceeding] from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger] 5 As mercy from your Lord. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing. 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them, if you would be certain. 7 La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He). It is He Who gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fore-fathers. 8 yet, they toy with their doubts. 9 So wait thou the day whereon the heaven will bring forth a manifest smoke: 10 which will smother the people. They will say, "This is a painful torment. 11 Then they will say, "Lord, relieve us from this torment, for truly we are now believers in You." 12 How can there be for them an admonition (at the time when the torment has reached them), when a Messenger explaining things clearly has already come to them. 13 Whereas they had then turned away from him and said, “He is a madman, tutored!”? 14 [Still,] behold, We shall postpone this suffering for a little while, although you are bound to revert [to your evil ways: but] 15 But on that Day We will assault them most mightily, and then We shall revenge! 16 ۞ Already before them We tried the people of Pharaoh, and a noble Messenger came unto them, 17 Saying: "Restore to me the slaves of Allah (i.e. the Children of Israel). Verily! I am to you a Messenger worthy of all trust, 18 Do not think yourselves to be above God: I have come to you with clear authority. 19 and, behold, it is with my Sustainer - and your Sustainer - that I seek refuge against all your endeavours to revile me. 20 'But if so be that you believe me not, go you apart from me!' 21 And [finally] he called to his Lord that these were a criminal people. 22 [Allah said], "Then set out with My servants by night. Indeed, you are to be pursued. 23 And leave the sea becalmed; they are a drowned host.' 24 How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, 25 And cornfields and goodly positions. 26 And comfort wherein they were amused. 27 Such was their end, and what had been theirs We gave to other people to inherit. 28 So the heaven and the earth did not weep for them, nor were they respited. 29
