A (goodly) number from those of old, 39 and a good many of later times. 40 And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left? 41 They will live amid the scorching, 42 Under the shadow of thick black smoke 43 neither cool, neither goodly; 44 Verily they have been heretofore affluent. 45 And persisted obstinately in wickedness supreme! 46 And they used to say, “When we are dead and have turned into dust and bones, will we surely be raised again?” 47 "And also our forefathers?" 48 Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Lo! those of old and those of later time 49 Will be gathered together on a certain day which is predetermined. 50 and then, verily, O you who have gone astray and called the truth a lie, 51 Most surely eat of a tree of Zaqqoom, 52 "Then will ye fill your insides therewith, 53 And thereon ye will drink of boiling water, 54 And drink as drinks the thirsty camel. 55 This shall be their hospitality on the Day of Doom. 56 We have created you, why do you not then assent? 57 Have you considered the seed? 58 Is it you who create it - or are We the source of its creation? 59 We have ordained death among you and We are not to be overcome, 60 In the matter of exchanging you for others, and to transform you into what you do not know. 61 You certainly knew about (your) first development. Why do you not take heed? 62 Have you considered what you sow? 63 Do you give it its increase, or are We the giver? 64 If We so wished, We could have reduced your harvest to rubble, and you would have been left wonder-struck to exclaim: 65 [Saying], "Indeed, we are [now] in debt; 66 nay; we have been undone!” 67 Tell Me! The water that you drink. 68 Is it you who cause it from the rainclouds to come down, or are We the Causer of it to come down? 69 If We willed, surely We would make it brackish. Wherefore give ye not thanks? 70 Have you thought about the fire you kindle? 71 Is it you that produce the trees for it, or are We the producers? 72 We have made it as a reminder of hell and as a utility for travellers in the jungle. 73 Glorify, then, (O Prophet), the name of your Great Lord. 74
