He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ HE FROWNED and turned away 1 Because there came to him the blind man (i.e. 'Abdullah bin Umm-Maktum, who came to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) while he was preaching to one or some of the Quraish chiefs). 2 And what would make you know that he would purify himself, 3 Or that he might receive admonition, and the teaching might profit him? 4 As for him who was indifferent, 5 To him you attend; 6 Yet it is not thy concern if he grow not (in grace). 7 But as to him who came to you running. 8 And is afraid (of Allah and His Punishment), 9 you pay him no heed. 10 Not this way – this is the advice. 11 So whoever wishes may remember it. 12 On honoured leaves 13 exalted, purified, 14 by the hands of scribes 15 Honourable and obedient. 16 May man be slain – how ungrateful he is! 17 Of what substance God created him? 18 Out of a drop of sperm! He creates and proportions him, 19 Then made his passage easy (at birth); 20 Then causeth him to die, and burieth him; 21 then, He will raise him when He wills. 22 Certainly, he has not duly fulfilled His commands. 23 Let the human being think about (how We produce) his food. 24 [how it is] that We pour down water, pouring it down abundantly; 25 Then We cracked the earth open under pressure (of germination) 26 and therein made the grains to grow 27 grapes, vegetables, 28 And olive-trees and palm-trees 29 And gardens of dense shrubbery 30 and fruits and herbage, 31 A provision for you and your cattle. 32 But when the deafening blast is sounded, 33 On the day when a man fleeth from his brother 34 and his mother and his father; 35 and his consort and his children; 36 Each man will have enough cares that day. 37 Some faces that Day will be beaming, 38 and be cheerful and joyous. 39 And other faces that Day will be dust-stained, 40 Dust shall cover them 41 They will be the unbelievers, transgressors. 42
