Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the Dawn 1 And by oath of ten nights. 2 The multiple and the one, 3 And by the night when it departeth, 4 Is this not a sufficient oath for intelligent people? 5 Have you not heard of how your Lord dealt with the tribe of 'Ad, 6 Of Eram with lofty pillars (erected as signposts in the desert), 7 the like of whom no nation was ever created in the lands of the world? 8 And Thamood, who hewed out the rocks of the valley? 9 And with Fir'awn, owner of the stakes 10 Who all waxed exorbitant in the cities, 11 spreading in them much corruption? 12 So your Lord poured on them different kinds of severe torment. 13 for, indeed, your Sustainer is ever on the watch! 14 As for man, whenever his Lord trieth him by honouring him, and is gracious unto him, he saith: My Lord honoureth me. 15 But when He tries him (differently), then straitens to him his means of subsistence, he says: My Lord has disgraced me. 16 (Since wealth does not necessarily guarantee everlasting happiness) then why do you not show kindness to the orphans, 17 Nor urge upon each other the feeding of the poor, 18 And devour the inheritance devouring greedily, 19 And you love wealth with immense love. 20 No indeed! When the earth is ground to powder, 21 and your Lord comes with the angels, rank upon rank, 22 And hell is made to appear on that day. On that day shall man be mindful, and what shall being mindful (then) avail him? 23 He will say: "Alas the woe! Would that I had sent ahead something in my life." 24 But on that Day none will punish as He (Allah) will punish, 25 and none can bind with bonds like His! 26 Serene soul, 27 Return unto thy Lord, content in His good pleasure! 28 enter, then, together with My [other true] servants 29 And enter into My garden. 30
