The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ I swear by this city, Makkah - 1 And you, [O Muhammad], are free of restriction in this city - 2 And (the mystic ties of) parent and child;- 3 Verily, We have created man in toil. 4 Deemest he that none will overpower him? 5 He says, “I destroyed vast wealth.” 6 What, does he think none has seen him? 7 Did We not assign unto him two eyes 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 And have shown him the two ways? 10 But he hath not attempted the Ascent - 11 And what will make you know the path that is steep? 12 [It is] the freeing of one's neck [from the burden of sin,] 13 And to feed in the day of hunger. 14 to an orphaned relative 15 Or the poor in distress; 16 Then will he be of those who believe, and enjoin patience, (constancy, and self-restraint), and enjoin deeds of kindness and compassion. 17 These are the people of the right hand. 18 But those who reject Our Signs, they are the (unhappy) Companions of the Left Hand. 19 and the Fire will close in on them. 20
