Al-Balad
The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
۞ I swear by this city -- 1 And thou art an indweller of this city - 2 And by the giver of birth, and whom he fathered, 3 indeed, We created man in trouble. 4 What, does he think none has power over him, 5 He says, "I have spent wealth in abundance." 6 Does he believe that none has seen him? 7 Have We not made for him a pair of eyes? 8 And a tongue and two lips? 9 and guided him on the two highways? 10 But he would not attempt the uphill road, 11 Would that you knew what Aqaba is! 12 (It is) the freeing of a slave, 13 or, in a day of famine, the feeding of 14 of an orphaned relative 15 or to a destitute lying in dust; 16 And to be of those who believe, and urge upon one another to persevere, and urge upon each other to be kind. 17 These are the people of the right. 18 As for those who rejected Our Signs, they are the People of the Left Hand. 19 Over them will be fire closed in. 20
