The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the sun and its brightness 1 And the moon when she followeth him, 2 and by the day when it displays him 3 And the night when it enshroudeth him, 4 by the heavens and that (Power) which established them, 5 And by oath of the earth and by oath of Him Who spread it. 6 Consider the human self, and how it is formed in accordance with what it is meant to be, 7 Then He inspired it to understand what is right and wrong for it; 8 To a happy state shall indeed attain he who causes this [self] to grow in purity, 9 And indeed failed is the one who covered it in sin. 10 In their presumptuous insolence the Thamud called the Truth a lie 11 When among them the great wretch arose, 12 although God's apostle had told them, "It is a she-camel belonging to God, so let her drink [and do her no harm]!" 13 But they denied him and hamstrung her. So their Lord brought down upon them destruction for their sin and made it equal [upon all of them]. 14 God is not afraid of the result of what He had decreed. 15
