The people of 'Ad, too, rejected the messengers. 123 when their brother Hood said to them, 'Will you not be godfearing? 124 Behold, I am an apostle [sent by Him] to you, [and therefore] worthy of your trust: 125 Fear Allah and obey me. 126 I ask no recompense of you for it. My reward is due from none but the Lord of all the worlds. 127 Build ye on every high place a monument for vain delight? 128 Erect palaces (thinking) that you will live for ever, 129 And will you [always,] whenever you lay hand [on others,] lay hand [on them] cruelly, without any restraint? 130 So fear Allah and obey me. 131 Fear Him who has given you all the things you know. 132 He hath aided you with cattle and sons. 133 and with gardens and springs. 134 I fear the punishment of a terrible day for you. 135 They replied: 'It is the same to us whether you admonish or whether you are not one of the admonishers. 136 This is not but the custom of the former peoples, 137 and we shall not be chastised.' 138 And so they gave him the lie: and thereupon We destroyed them. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 139 But, verily, thy Sustainer - He alone - is almighty, a dispenser of grace! 140
