The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the star when it goes down, (or vanishes). 1 This fellow-man of yours has not gone astray, nor is he deluded, 2 Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination. 3 It is but a divine revelation, which is revealed to him. 4 taught him by one terrible in power, 5 Endued with Wisdom: for he appeared (in stately form); 6 While he [Jibrael (Gabriel)] was in the highest part of the horizon, 7 Then he approached and came closer, 8 until he was as close to him as the distance of two bows, or even less. 9 He revealed to God's servant whatever he wanted. 10 The heart was not untrue in (making him see) what he saw. 11 Will ye therefore dispute with him concerning that which he hath seen? 12 And certainly he saw him in another descent, 13 At the farthest lote-tree; 14 by the Garden of [Eternal] Repose, 15 When that covered the lote-tree which did cover it! 16 [And withal,] the eye did not waver, nor yet did it stray: 17 Verily he saw one of the greater revelations of his Lord. 18 Have ye seen Lat. and 'Uzza, 19 And Manat, the other third (of the pagan deities)? 20 Is the male for you and for Him the female? 21 That indeed is a division most unfair! 22 They are not but [mere] names you have named them - you and your forefathers - for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow not except assumption and what [their] souls desire, and there has already come to them from their Lord guidance. 23 Does man imagine that it is his due to have all that he might wish for, 24 And to God belongs the First and the Last. 25
