In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
You, who have wrapped yourself up with a mantle, 1 worship (God) for a few hours at night. 2 Half of it, or a little less than that, 3 or add to it a little; and recite the Qur'an slowly and distinctly. 4 Surely We will make to light upon you a weighty Word. 5 Indeed, the first part of night is heavier in tread, and more upright in speech. 6 You are indeed much occupied during the day with the affairs of the world. 7 And remember the name of your Lord and devote yourself to Him with (exclusive) devotion. 8 He is the Lord of the East and the West. There is no god but He. So take Him alone as your protector. 9 And patiently endure upon what the disbelievers say, and leave them for good. 10 And leave Me with [the matter of] the deniers, those of ease [in life], and allow them respite a little. 11 for with Us there are fetters, and a furnace, 12 and food that chokes, and a painful chastisement, 13 on the Day the earth and mountains shall shake and the mountains crumble into shifting sand dunes. 14 We have sent you a Messenger, who will witness your deeds, just as We sent a Messenger to the Pharaoh. 15 But Pharaoh disobeyed the messenger, so We seized him with a ruinous seizure. 16 How then, if ye disbelieve, shall ye escape, on a Day which shall make children grey-headed? 17 [the Day] on which the skies shall be rent asunder, [and] His promise [of resurrection] fulfilled? 18 Surely this is a Reminder; so let him who will take unto his Lord a way. 19
