The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
O THOU [in thy solitude] enfolded! 1 Arise, and warn. 2 And thy Lord do thou magnify! 3 And thine inner self purify! 4 and defilement flee! 5 do not bestow a favour in the expectation of receiving more in return; 6 And for the sake of your Lord, patiently endure. 7 For when the Trump is sounded 8 that very Day shall be a day of anguish, 9 Dolorous for the unbelievers. 10 Leave Me alone, (to deal) with the (creature) whom I created (bare and) alone!- 11 and whom I have granted abundant wealth 12 and sons that stand in witness. 13 And spread [everything] before him, easing [his life]. 14 And yet he desires that I should add more! 15 By no means! For to Our Signs he has been refractory! 16 I will make a distressing punishment overtake him. 17 For he thought and he plotted;- 18 death seize him, how he determined! 19 Yea, Woe to him; How he plotted!- 20 Then he thought; 21 Then he frowned and he scowled; 22 Then turned he back, and grew stiff-necked. 23 and says, "All this is mere spellbinding eloquence handed down [from olden times]! 24 It is nothing but the word of a mortal' 25 I will cast him into hell. 26 And what will explain to thee what Hell-Fire is? 27 It shall not spare, nor leave. 28 Burning the skins! 29 Over it are nineteen (angels guarding). 30 We have appointed only angels to be masters of the Fire, and their number We have appointed only as a trial for the unbelievers, that those who were given the Book may have certainty, and that those who believe may increase in belief, and that those who were given the Book and those who believe may not be in-doubt, and that those in whose hearts there is sickness, and the unbelievers, may say, 'What did God intend by this as a similitude?' So God leads astray whomsoever He will, and He guides whomsoever He will; and none knows the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but a Reminder to mortals. 31
