The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O YOU ENFOLDED in your mantle (of reform), 1 Arise and warn! 2 proclaim the greatness of your Lord, 3 And thine inner self purify! 4 And uncleanness do shun, 5 do not bestow a favour in the expectation of receiving more in return; 6 And be patient for the sake of your Lord (i.e. perform your duty to Allah)! 7 When the Trumpet shall be sounded, 8 that shall be a Harsh Day 9 For the infidels, not easy. 10 Let Me alone with him whom I created lonely. 11 and appointed for him ample wealth 12 and sons that stand in witness. 13 To whom I made (life) smooth and comfortable! 14 And yet he desires that I should add more! 15 Nay! For lo! he hath been stubborn to Our revelations. 16 On him I shall impose a fearful doom. 17 He reflected and then hatched a scheme. 18 and thus he destroys himself, the way he meditates: 19 Again, death seized him, how was his determining! 20 May he be condemned again for his schemes! He looked around, 21 Then frowned he and scowled. 22 Then he turned back and was arrogant 23 He said, 'This is naught but a trumped-up sorcery; 24 "This is nothing but the word of a human being!" 25 I will cast him into Hell-fire 26 And what will explain to thee what Hell-Fire is? 27 It shall not spare, nor leave. 28 it scorches the skin; 29 Over it are nineteen (guards). 30 We have not appointed the guards of hell, except angels; and did not keep this number except to test the disbelievers – in order that the People given the Book(s) may be convinced, and to increase the faith of the believers – and so that the People given the Book(s) and the Muslims may not have any doubt – and so that those in whose hearts is a disease and the disbelievers, may say, “What does Allah mean by this amazing example?” This is how Allah sends astray whomever He wills, and guides whomever He wills; and no one knows the armies of Allah except Him; and this is not but an advice to man. 31
