He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ The Prophet frowned and turned away 1 when the blind came to him. 2 And what could let you know? Perhaps he (comes to hear you) to be purified. 3 or take heed and derive benefit from [Our] warning? 4 As for he who thinks himself without need, 5 to him didst thou give thy whole attention, 6 And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified. 7 As for the one who comes to you earnestly (striving for guidance). 8 And whereas he fears, 9 you pay him no heed. 10 By no means! Verily it is an admonition. 11 So whoso wills may give heed to it. 12 (This Quran) is also recorded in honorable books, 13 uplifted, purified, 14 (Written) by the hands of scribes- 15 Noble and dutiful. 16 Perish the human! How unthankful he is! 17 [Does man ever consider] out of what substance [God] creates him? 18 Of a sperm-drop He created him, and determined him, 19 Then He makes the Path easy for him; 20 Then gave him death, so had him put in the grave. 21 Then when He pleases, He will bring him back to life. 22 Nay, but man did not fulfil what Allah had enjoined upon him. 23 So let man just consider his food: 24 It is We Who pour forth water, pouring, 25 and let the earth to break open 26 to yield therein corn, 27 And grapes and clover, 28 And olive-trees and palm-trees 29 and dense-tree'd gardens, 30 And fruits and Abba (herbage, etc.), 31 (These are made so as to be) means of enjoyment for you and your cattle. 32 But when the deafening cry comes, 33 it will be such a day when a person will run away from his brother, 34 And from his mother and his father, 35 his wife and his children. 36 on that Day each will be occupied with his own business, making him oblivious of all save himself. 37 Faces on that Day shall be beaming, 38 Laughing and full of joy, 39 but others will be gloomy 40 and overcast with gloom: 41 These will be the faces of the sinful disbelievers. 42
