Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the Dawn 1 And by oath of ten nights. 2 And by oath of the even and the odd. 3 and by the night when it moves on towards daybreak (reward and retribution in the next life is an absolute reality). 4 Is there in that an oath for a mindful man? 5 Did you not see how did your Lord deal with (the tribe of) Aad? 6 With many-columned Iram, 7 Like whom no one else was born in the cities. 8 And (with) Thamud (people), who cut (hewed) out rocks in the valley (to make dwellings)? 9 And (with) Fir'aun (Pharaoh), who had pegs (who used to torture men by binding them to pegs)? 10 who transgressed in the countries of the world 11 And multiplied iniquity therein? 12 Therefore did thy Lord pour on them a scourge of diverse chastisements: 13 Indeed, your Lord is in observation. 14 As for man, when his Lord tests him by exalting him and bestowing His bounties upon him, he says: “My Lord has exalted me.” 15 However, when his Lord tests him by a measured amount of sustenance, he says, "God has disgraced me". 16 No. In fact you are not generous to the orphans, 17 nor do you urge one another to feed the needy. 18 And you readily devour the inheritance with greed. 19 And love wealth with abounding love. 20 Nay! when the earth is made to crumble to pieces, 21 and thy Lord comes, and the angels rank on rank, 22 And hell is brought near that day; on that day man will remember, but how will the remembrance (then avail him)? 23 He will say, “Alas – if only I had sent some good deeds ahead, during my lifetime!” 24 Wherefore on that Day none shall torment with His torment. 25 nor will any bind as He binds. 26 'O soul at peace, 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him], 28 Join My worshipers and 29 yea, enter thou My paradise!" 30
