The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
۞ I swear by this city (Mecca) – 1 And thou shalt be allowed in yonder city 2 And (the mystic ties of) parent and child;- 3 indeed, We created man in trouble. 4 Does he, then, think that no one has power over him? 5 And he saith: I have destroyed vast wealth: 6 Thinketh he that none beholdeth him? 7 Did We not make two eyes for him? 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 And pointed out to him the two conspicuous ways? 10 Yet he attempteth not the steep, 11 How will you comprehend what the Steep ascent is? -- 12 (It is) the setting free of a slave, 13 or the feeding, upon a day of [one's own] hunger, 14 to an orphan near of kin; 15 Or some poor wretch in misery, 16 Then he is of those who believe and charge one another to show patience, and charge one another to show compassion. 17 Such are the Companions of the Right Hand. 18 But those who disbelieve in Our verses, they are the Companions of the Left, 19 Over them will be fire closed in. 20
