The chiefs of Pharaoh's people said: Lo! this is some knowing wizard, 109 who seeks to drive you out from your land. What would you have us do?' 110 They said, "Postpone [the matter of] him and his brother and send among the cities gatherers 111 to summon every skilful magician to your presence.' 112 And the magicians came unto Fir'awn. They said: surely there is for us a reward if we are the overcomers. 113 He said: "Yea, (and more),- for ye shall in that case be (raised to posts) nearest (to my person)." 114 So they said: "O Moses, you may cast your spell first, or we shall cast ours." 115 "You cast it first," answered Moses. When they cast their spell, they bewitched the eyes of the people and petrified them by conjuring up a great charm. 116 We inspired Moses to throw his staff, and suddenly it began to swallow-up all that the magicians had (falsely) invented. 117 ۞ Thus the truth prevailed, and that which they had brought vanished. 118 And Pharaoh and his people were overcome right there and became debased. 119 But the sorcerers fell down prostrate in adoration. 120 saying: 'We believe in the Lord of the universe, 121 the Lord of Moses and Aaron.' 122 Said Pharaoh, "You believed in him before I gave you permission. Indeed, this is a conspiracy which you conspired in the city to expel therefrom its people. But you are going to know. 123 Surely I will cut off your hands and feet on the opposite sides and thereafter I will crucify you all. 124 They replied: 'We shall surely return to our Lord. 125 And you do not resent us except because we believed in the signs of our Lord when they came to us. Our Lord, pour upon us patience and let us die as Muslims [in submission to You]." 126
