The people of 'Ad, too, rejected the messengers. 123 When their brother Hud said unto them: fear ye not? 124 I am for you a faithful Messenger, 125 so fear you God, and obey you me. 126 And I do not ask you for it any payment. My payment is only from the Lord of the worlds. 127 "Do you build useless monuments on every mountain 128 And take for yourselves palaces and fortresses that you might abide eternally? 129 And when you lay hands (on men) you lay hands (like) tyrants; 130 "Now fear Allah, and obey me. 131 Have fear of Him Who has provided you with all the (good) things you know; 132 succoured you with flocks and sons, 133 gardens and fountains. 134 I am afraid that you will suffer the torment of the Day of Judgment." 135 They replied, "It makes no difference to us whether you preach or do not preach, 136 This is not but the custom of the former peoples, 137 And we are not going to be punished. 138 So they gave him the lie, then We destroyed them. Most surely there is a sign in this, but most of them do not believe. 139 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful. 140
