Thamud (people) belied the Messenger. 141 Their brother Salih said to them: 'Will you not be cautious? 142 Truly, I am a trustworthy messenger for you, 143 So keep your duty to Allah and obey me. 144 "No reward do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds. 145 "Will ye be left secure, in (the enjoyment of) all that ye have here? 146 among gardens and fountains, 147 And tilled fields and heavy-sheathed palm-trees, 148 And you carve out of the mountains, homes, with skill. 149 Fear Allah and obey me 150 And do not obey the bidding of the extravagant, 151 who do corruption in the earth, and set not things aright.' 152 They said: thou art but one of the bewitched; 153 Thou art but a human being like unto us. So bring thou a sign if thou art of the truth-tellers. 154 He said: "Here is a she-camel: she has a right of watering, and ye have a right of watering, (severally) on a day appointed. 155 so do her no harm, or the punishment of an awful day will befall you." 156 But they hamstrung her and so became regretful. 157 for the suffering [predicted by Salih,] befell them [then and there]. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 158 And verily thy Lord! He is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
