A crowd of earlier generations 39 And a company of the later peoples. 40 As for the people on the left hand, how miserable they will be! 41 In hot wind and boiling water, 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor honorable. 44 Lo! heretofore they were effete with luxury 45 And were stubborn upon the great sin (of disbelief). 46 And they were wont to say: when we have died and become dust and bones, shall we, then, verily be raised? 47 "And also our forefathers?" 48 Say: The first and the last, 49 Are going to be assembled on the appointed time of a Day Known. 50 Then you, you misguided ones, who deny the truth, 51 Shall surely eat of the tree of Az-Zqqum. 52 "Then will ye fill your insides therewith, 53 And shall be drinkers thereon of boiling water. 54 And drink as drinks the thirsty camel. 55 Such will be their welcome on Judgment Day! 56 It is We Who created you, so why do you not accept the truth? 57 So what is your opinion regarding the semen you discharge? 58 Do you yourselves create it, or are We the Creators? 59 We have decreed among you Death; We shall not be outstripped; 60 That We may substitute others like unto you and produce you into that which ye know not. 61 You certainly knew about (your) first development. Why do you not take heed? 62 Behold! that which ye sow. 63 Do you yourselves sow it, or are We the Sowers? 64 We could turn it, if We pleased, into straw; then you would rue the day, 65 Surely we are burdened with debt: 66 "Indeed are we shut out (of the fruits of our labour)" 67 See ye the water which ye drink? 68 Is it you who caused it to descend from the cloud, or is it We Who cause it to descend? 69 If We so pleased, We certainly could make it salty. Why, then, are you not grateful? 70 Have you thought about the fire you kindle? 71 Have you raised its tree, or We have raised it? 72 We, even We, appointed it a memorial and a comfort for the dwellers in the wilderness. 73 Then celebrate with praises the name of thy Lord, the Supreme! 74
