He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ The Prophet frowned and turned away 1 Because there came to him the blind man (interrupting). 2 Yet for all thou didst know, [O Muhammad,] he might perhaps have grown in purity, 3 (He might) remember, and the Reminder might profit him. 4 But the self-sufficient, 5 To him you attend; 6 Whereas it is not on thee that he is not cleansed. 7 But as to him who came to thee striving earnestly, 8 and in awe of God 9 From him will you divert yourself. 10 Not this way – this is the advice. 11 (and whoso wills, shall remember it) 12 On honourable pages. 13 Exalted, pure. 14 (Written) by the hands of scribes- 15 Noble and righteous. 16 Cursed be man! how ungrateful is he! 17 Out of what did Allah create him? 18 Out of a sperm-drop did He create him and then determined a measure for him, 19 Then maketh the way easy for him, 20 then He caused him to die and brought him to the grave, 21 Then, when it is His Will, He will raise him up (again). 22 Nay, but (man) has not done what He commanded him. 23 Let man consider his food: 24 That We pour down the water, pouring (it) down in abundance, 25 then We split the earth in fissures 26 And caused to grow within it grain 27 together with grapes and vegetables, 28 and the olive, and the palm, 29 And gardens, dense with many trees, 30 And fruit and grass - 31 A provision for you and for your cattle. 32 But when there comes the Deafening Blast 33 on the Day when each man shall flee from his brother, 34 Mother and father, 35 and from his spouse and his children: 36 on that Day every man among them will have enough concern of his own -- 37 Some faces will shine, 38 Laughing, rejoicing. 39 And many a face will be covered with dust on that day. 40 Covered with the blackness (of shame): 41 These are they who are unbelievers, the wicked. 42
