We also sent Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his Council, and he said, 'Surely, I am the Messenger of the Lord of all Being.' 46 But when he showed them Our signs they laughed at them, 47 even though each sign We showed them was greater than the previous one. We afflicted them with torment so that they might return [to the right path]. 48 And they said [to Musa (Moses)]: "O you sorcerer! Invoke your Lord for us according to what He has covenanted with you. Verily, We shall guide ourselves (aright)." 49 But when We removed the torment from them, behold! They broke their covenant (that they will believe if We remove the torment for them). 50 Then Pharaoh made a proclamation to his people: 'My people, is the kingdom of Egypt not mine and these rivers which flow beneath me? What, can you not see? 51 Nay! I am better than this fellow, who is contemptible, and who can hardly speak distinctly: 52 and why have not armlets of gold been bestowed on him and why is there not a train of angels accompanying him?" 53 He incited his people to levity and they obeyed him. Surely they were an iniquitous people. 54 So when they vexed Us, We took vengeance on them, and We drowned them all. 55 And We made them a precedent and an ensample unto those after. 56
