The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
O thou enveloped! 1 Arise and warn 2 And your Lord glorify 3 purify your garments; 4 And uncleanness do shun, 5 Do not give, thinking to gain greater 6 And for the sake of your Lord, patiently endure. 7 Finally, when the Trumpet is sounded, 8 it will be a hard day 9 not of ease, for all who [now] deny the truth! 10 Leave Me Alone (to deal) with whom I created Alone (without any means, i.e. Al-Walid bin Al-Mughirah Al-Makhzumi)! 11 And gave him abundant wealth 12 and sons standing before him, 13 and for whom I have smoothed the way (to power and riches), 14 After all that he desires that I should give more; 15 Never. He is refractory of Our signs. 16 [and so] I shall constrain him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 Indeed, he thought and deliberated. 18 But may he be cursed how he plotted; 19 Again accursed be he, how evilly did he decide! 20 and then he looks [around for new arguments,] 21 Then frowned he and scowled. 22 Then turned he back, and grew stiff-necked. 23 And said: This is naught else than magic from of old; 24 "This is nothing but the word of a mortal!" 25 Soon I will cast him into hell. 26 What could make you conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It leaves naught nor does it spare aught. 28 it scorches (even) the skin. 29 Over it are nineteen keepers. 30 We have appointed none but angels as the keepers of the Fire, and We have not made their number but as a trial for the unbelievers so that those who have been endowed with the Book will be convinced and the believers' faith will increase, and neither those who have been endowed with the Book nor the believers will fall into any doubt. As for those in whose hearts there is a sickness as well as the unbelievers, they will say: “What did Allah aim at by this strange parable?” Thus does Allah let whomsoever He pleases to go astray, and directs whomsoever He pleases to the Right Way. And none knows the hosts of your Lord but He. (And Hell has only been mentioned here) that people may take heed. 31
